Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, is a relatively common condition among adults (an estimated 75% of Americans suffer from it at some point during their lives). Hemorrhoids are caused by swollen veins in your anus and rectum, with symptoms that include pain, itching, and rectal bleeding.
Fortunately, in many cases hemorrhoids does not require medical treatment and will eventually go away by itself. However, those who are suffering from hemorrhoids often experience mild to severe levels of discomfort. To help them out, we’ve put together a list of useful home remedies to help handle or prevent hemorrhoids altogether.
1. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel has been used across the world for years to treat a number of health issues. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera is great for reducing the itchiness and irritation caused by hemorrhoids.
When it comes to treating hemorrhoids, make sure to use only pure aloe vera gel. Pay close attention to the purity since additives or preservatives can make your symptoms worse. If necessary, you can even harvest pure aloe vera gel directly from inside an aloe plant’s leaves.
Aside from that, it’s also important to confirm that you’re not allergic to aloe vera. If you’re unsure, try rubbing a small amount of gel onto your arm and wait for 24-48 hours. If no reaction occurs, it should be safe for you to use aloe vera to treat your hemorrhoids.
2. Ice Packs
If your hemorrhoids are causing pain or irritation, try applying an ice pack to the affected area. The cold temperatures can help by numbing pain and temporarily reducing swelling. This is most effective when used on large, painful hemorrhoids.
Make sure to wrap your ice inside a towel or cloth to avoid damaging your skin. Leave the ice pack on for around 15 minutes and repeat the process hourly as needed.
3. Warm Baths
Warm baths are an easy way to sooth the irritation caused by hemorrhoids. If you don’t have your own bathtub, try using a stiz bath – this is a small plastic tub that can fit over a toilet seat. For the best effect, try taking a warm bath for 20 minutes after every bowel movement.
You can even add other ingredients such as Epsom salts to the bath. A cup of Epsom salts can make the bath more effective by reducing the pain felt from hemorrhoids.
4. Witch Hazel
Witch Hazel is a natural ingredient that can be used to reduce the itching and pain caused by hemorrhoids. It is an astringent – a substance that causes tissue to shrink. Research has found that Witch Hazel also contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it an excellent treatment for hemorrhoids.
You can purchase Witch Hazel essential oil in liquid form. To apply, add a few drops onto a cotton ball and dab it onto the hemorrhoid. If it makes the symptoms worse, stop immediately and switch to a less direct method. Make sure that your Witch Hazel is not diluted with alcohol as this can dry out and irritate your skin further.
5. Coconut Oil
As a natural moisturizer, Coconut Oil can be used to help with hemorrhoid symptoms. It has strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which allows it to reduce swelling and pain respectively. In addition, Coconut Oil has antibacterial properties, meaning that it can help the hemorrhoids to heal faster than normal.
When using Coconut Oil to treat hemorrhoids, make sure to use the best quality Coconut Oil that you can find. Organic, virgin Coconut Oil has the most health benefits since it is the least processed variety. Coconut Oil can used either internally (consuming it) or externally (applied directly to the hemorrhoid with a cotton ball). Note that if your hemorrhoids have been caused by diarrhea, it may be best to avoid using coconut oil since its laxative effects may make the symptoms worse.
